I’ve already had an abortion and don’t want another one. What are my options?

If you are facing an unplanned pregnancy and are uncomfortable getting an abortion, the good news is that there are other options that you can choose from. There are typically three options for an unplanned pregnancy: abortion, parenting, and adoption.

If you already know abortion is not for you, then read the article below on the remaining two options to help you make an informed decision on how to move forward.

Parenting

Unfortunately, babies don’t come with an instruction manual or FAQ; however, a few important things to think about while you’re weighing your decision:

  1. Do I have a support system in place if I were to raise the baby?

  2. Do I have a way to provide a home for the baby?

  3. Is there a way to further my education or career goals if I have a baby?

This may seem daunting, but you do not have to have the answers to all of these questions right away! Whether you have the support of a partner/family or you are considering single-parenting, there are options and resources available to help you if you decide to parent.

It’s natural that you have a lot of questions or concerns about becoming a parent, but our team is equipped to help you navigate this journey as you consider your options. Contact us today for a no-cost appointment where you can ask questions about the possibility of parenting.

Adoption

As the parent, you are in the driver’s seat of what adoption could possibly look like. Each situation is unique, so you can tailor your adoption plan to be closed or as open as you’re comfortable with, all depending on the type of relationship you would want with your child:

  1. Open Adoption– Open adoption is where the adoptive family and birth parents have in-person visits with each other.

  2. Closed Adoption- This means that all the details of you, the biological mother, are completely sealed and unavailable for inquiry.

  3. Semi-Open- Birth Parents and Adoptive Parents will exchange non-identifying information and communication through their adoption agency for minimal contact.

In many cases, the adoption agency or adoptive family can assist with the health costs of pregnancy and legal costs of adoption.  If this is an option that you’re interested in exploring, we also offer no-cost appointments where you can ask all your adoption-related questions in a pressure-free environment.

Abortion

While you may not be considering an abortion, it’s still important to know that women “who have multiple surgical abortions using a curet are at risk of scarring of the inner lining of the uterus. This condition is associated with difficulty in becoming pregnant in the future.”

Repeat abortions can also weaken the cervix, which can potentially impact the ability to get pregnant in the future.
