Since the removal of Roe vs. Wade, many conversations have been had about women’s healthcare and the changing abortion laws across the country. Some people have speculated that women’s lives will be put at risk and they could die if their state denies them an abortion.
Thankfully, these speculations are not true. In this article, we’ll define what abortion really is and explore the complications that can cause concern.
Defining Abortion
An abortion is a medical or surgical procedure utilized to terminate a pregnancy. Contrary to a lot of media talk, abortion is not prenatal care.
It’s actually rare that an abortion is needed to save a woman’s life. Complications can happen that require the prompt removal of a pregnancy, but these resolutions all fall under prenatal care and not abortions.
What Pregnancy Complications Are Protected?
Every single state in America, even those with full bans on abortion, has enacted protections surrounding their new abortion laws to ensure women’s lives are safe. Here are a couple of examples:
Ectopic Pregnancy
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the pregnancy implants and begins to grow outside of the uterus. This can occur anywhere, but typically happens in one of the fallopian tubes.
Ectopic pregnancies are not viable and can create a life-threatening situation for the mother. Women who experience an ectopic pregnancy will continue to be cared for and allowed the pregnancy to be removed.
Terminal Illness
In cases of terminal illness, women will be allowed an abortion if they desire it because this falls under the protection of a woman’s life.
Imagine a scenario where a newly pregnant woman discovers she has cancer. Oncologists cannot begin cancer treatments if the woman is pregnant for fear of fetal harm.
These kinds of cases are exceptionally rare, but are still provided for under the revised abortion laws in America. Women won’t be left to die if they do not have legal access to an abortion.
